Methodology
What the prices are
Every price is a USD list price for one year on a non-premium name, read from the registrar's own public price page. A domain name registrar sets three prices for each top-level domain: registration (the first year), renewal (each later year) and transfer (moving the name in from another registrar). Taxes are not included. Premium names, bulk or membership discounts and coupon codes are not covered.
Why renewal and the 3-year cost
The first year is often discounted and later years are not, so the first-year price alone says little about what a name costs to keep. The tables therefore lead with the renewal price and add one figure: 3-year cost = registration price + 2 x renewal price. Where a registrar's page showed a first-year sale price next to a regular price, the register column and the 3-year cost use the regular price; the sale price is shown in its own column on that TLD's page and quoted in the notes, so a sale can make the real first year lower than the 3-year cost assumes.
The 5-year cost
Each TLD page and each registrar page adds a second figure: 5-year cost = first-year price + 4 x renewal price. Here the first-year price is the first-year sale price when the registrar's page showed one on the day it was read, and the regular registration price otherwise; the sale price has its own column, and 'none recorded' there means the page showed a single registration price. TLD tables are sorted by this figure and the lowest row is marked in words. A sale can end at any time, so the 5-year cost describes the day of collection only. Where a registrar lists a renewal price below its registration price and no sale price was recorded, a note on the page says so and both prices are shown as collected.
How the pages are made
An automated system fetched the public price pages on 2026-10-08 (UTC), stored each price with the date it was read and the page it came from, and a script generated these pages from that file. The same script then checks its own output: every price has a date next to it, every page carries the notices at the top, and no page links anywhere except to other pages of this site and to Wikipedia. The pages are published as generated, with no manual step in between, so an extraction error is possible.
Links and affiliate status
This site currently contains no affiliate links, and it earns nothing when a visitor registers, renews or transfers a domain anywhere. The addresses of the registrars' price pages are written as plain text, not as links, and a registrar's name only ever links to this site's own page about that registrar. If affiliate links are ever added, a disclosure will appear on the page before the first such link, and this section will say so. Not affiliated with or endorsed by any registrar.
Which registrars are included
A registrar is included only when its price pages could be read with a plain request, its robots.txt does not disallow those pages, and the terms that were read hold no clause against automated reading or republishing of its prices. Registrars whose terms forbid reproducing their site data, or whose pages or terms could not be read without getting past a block, are left out. On 2026-10-08 that left 4 registrars: Porkbun, Hover, Vercel Domains and NearlyFreeSpeech.NET. The comparison is therefore narrow: a registrar that is not on this site may charge less. The registrars page gives the source page and the terms note for each one.
How to read the tables
- 'Lowest renewal' means the lowest among the registrars compared here, nothing more.
- When two registrars list the same renewal price, the one with the lower 3-year cost is shown first and the tie is stated.
- 'not listed' means no price was found for that registrar and TLD on the day of collection.
- 'not offered or not collected' on a registrar's page means the same thing: its price page showed no one-year price for that TLD when it was read, either because the registrar does not sell it or because the price could not be collected. No cell is left blank and no missing price is shown as zero.
- The date next to a price is the day it was read. Older dates mean older prices.
- The order of the tables is by price only. Nothing on this site is paid placement.
